Monitor receptacle tension, power and branch circuitry. Diagnose wiring problems without removing outlets or panels. Receptacle Testers (or outlet testers) are devices used to verify that an AC wall outlet is wired properly. Most testers plug directly into an AC outlet and use a series of diagnostic lights to inform the electrican of the condition or status of the outlet. Although a multimeter could be used to perform a series of tests which would give the same results, a receptacle tester can quickly establish the condition of the outlet without additional testing. The tests themselves essentially fall into two categories: tests which determine that the outlet actually functions and tests which determine that the outlet is properly wired for safe operation.
